Gurdjieff and the Arch-PreposterousAn Hermetic Descent into the Mind by Joy Lonsdale
George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff was one of the most remarkable esoteric teachers of the Twentieth century, and his 'All and Everything' (Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson) is an allegorical masterpiece which attracts many attempts at interpretation. This book focuses on the fact that many allegorical writings have been constructed with the assistance of a special form of encipherment known as the Hermetic Code. Such writings have been, and still are, the vehicle for much that does not appear to the casual reader. Beneath the surface there is described an alchemical process which by long and concentrated effort can bring about a transformation leading to a higher level of consciousness. Joy Lonsdale believes that Gurdjieff used this code and she demonstrates this by applying it as a key to an understanding of the 'descent' chapters in 'All and Everything'.
